Imagina Project - The Machine Week 5

Presentation week is almost reaching soon! So this week is mainly focusing on texturing the environment and I handled the cave environment for this texturing part. This was very intensive as there are a lot of objects and features in the cave scene, most of it presents its own set of challenge.

I started simple first by texturing the small rocks and big boulders that can be found in the cave. Our film is mainly using painted texture and it is more stylized and utilizing ‘less realistic texture’. We mainly took reference from artist Goro Fujita brush strokes application and tried to apply it for ourselves. Hence, I also had to ensure that all the textures in the rest of the environment scenes and characters remain consistent to establish a constant same visual look throughout the whole film.

The most challenging part of the cave to texture is perhaps the stalagmites and the foundation. The stalagmites in The Machine has to glow near the entrance of the cave to give a general ambient lighting. I tested several methods for the glow and most of it did not work out. After many testing, I finally got the result I needed.

Hopefully these textures are passed during the presentation.
